Anti-Reflux Surgery

Anti-reflux surgery, often called fundoplication, treats gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), where stomach acid flows back into the esophagus, causing irritation. Symptoms include heartburn, regurgitation, chest pain, difficulty swallowing, and chronic cough. GERD can lead to complications like esophagitis or Barrett’s esophagus if untreated. When medications and lifestyle changes fail, surgery is recommended. The procedure involves wrapping the upper stomach around the lower esophagus to strengthen the barrier against acid reflux. Laparoscopic fundoplication is common, using small incisions for quicker recovery. Patients typically experience relief from symptoms, but risks include difficulty swallowing or bloating. Post-surgery, a modified diet and avoiding trigger foods are crucial. The surgery is effective for long-term GERD control, especially for those unresponsive to proton pump inhibitors or seeking to avoid lifelong medication.
